Boston Fire Department

The Boston Fire Department (BFD) is the municipal fire and emergency services agency serving the City of Boston, Massachusetts. It provides fire suppression, EMS assistance, hazardous materials response, technical rescue, marine firefighting, fire prevention, and emergency response throughout Boston. The department operates a large fleet of engines, ladder companies, rescue companies, tower ladders, marine units, and specialized technical-rescue resources. Boston's fire-service history dates back to 1678, while the modern municipal Fire Department was established in 1837 and became a paid department as part of its later professionalization.
