Department Profile

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Police (MBTA Transit Police) is the primary law enforcement agency responsible for protecting the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) transit system throughout the Greater Boston region. As a full-service, statewide law enforcement agency, the MBTA Transit Police provide 24/7 police services across one of the nation's largest public transportation networks, including subway lines, commuter rail, buses, ferries, stations, parking facilities, and other MBTA-owned property. Officers are responsible for crime prevention, patrol operations, criminal investigations, counterterrorism, emergency response, traffic enforcement, crowd management, and public safety for millions of passengers each year. The department also operates specialized units including K-9, SWAT, Detectives, Bicycle Patrol, Motorcycle Unit, Explosive Detection Teams, Criminal Intelligence, and Emergency Management, while working closely with local, state, and federal law enforcement partners to ensure the safety and security of the region's transportation infrastructure.
