Department Profile
The Alaska State Troopers (AST) are the primary statewide law enforcement agency for Alaska and operate under the Alaska Department of Public Safety. Unlike many state police agencies, the Alaska State Troopers provide full-service law enforcement across vast rural and remote regions where there are no local police departments. Troopers patrol everything from major highways and urban communities to isolated villages only accessible by aircraft, boat, or snowmachine. Their responsibilities include patrol, criminal investigations, search and rescue, highway safety, wildlife enforcement, aviation support, and emergency response, making them one of the most diverse law enforcement agencies in the United States. AST responds to more than 135,000 calls for service annually with approximately 321 sworn troopers serving across Alaska's enormous geographic area.
