The Boston Police Department (BPD) is the municipal law enforcement agency serving the City of Boston, Massachusetts. The department provides patrol, criminal investigations, traffic enforcement, community policing, emergency response, and specialized law enforcement services throughout the city. BPD operates 12 district stations and numerous specialized units and bureaus. Boston has one of the oldest law-enforcement traditions in the United States, with a city watch established in 1631. The modern Boston Police Department was established in 1854 with 250 officers.
