Department Profile
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) is California's statewide fire agency and one of the largest and most capable fire departments in the world. As an all-hazards emergency response agency, CAL FIRE is responsible for protecting more than 31 million acres of privately owned wildlands throughout California while also providing emergency services through contracts with local governments in 36 of California's 58 counties. In addition to wildland firefighting, CAL FIRE responds to structure fires, emergency medical incidents, hazardous materials incidents, technical rescues, vehicle accidents, and natural disasters. The department also oversees fire prevention, defensible space inspections, vegetation management, prescribed fire programs, forestry, law enforcement, aviation operations, and state fire training. With thousands of firefighters, hundreds of fire stations, an extensive fleet of fire apparatus, and one of the world's largest aerial firefighting programs, CAL FIRE plays a critical role in protecting California's communities, forests, and natural resources.
