he California Highway Patrol (CHP) is the statewide law enforcement agency of California and the largest state police agency in the United States. The CHP is responsible for enforcing traffic laws and ensuring public safety on California's state highways and unincorporated roadways while also providing a wide range of law enforcement services. In addition to highway patrol, CHP investigates traffic collisions, combats impaired driving, provides commercial vehicle enforcement, protects state officials and facilities, supports homeland security, and assists local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. Specialized units include Air Operations, SWAT, K-9, Motorcycle Units, Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Teams (MAIT), Commercial Vehicle Section, Special Response Teams, and the Protective Services Division. With more than 7,000 sworn officers serving from over 100 area offices, the CHP plays a vital role in keeping California's roadways and communities safe.
